Bruno Sacco - the face behind the Mercedes SL
Bruno Sacco is the face behind the Mercedes SL, which as a 300 SL is even
one of the most sought-after classic cars ever.
Bruno Sacco was born on 12.11.1933 in Udine, Italy. Sacco first completed an apprenticeship as a surveyor
before visiting the 1951 Turin Motor Show and being so fascinated by the Studebaker Starlight that he moved
to Turin in 1952 to study mechanical engineering. During said studies, Bruno Sacco gained his first
experience as a designer at the Italian design firm Carozzeria Ghia, as well as at the
Pininfarina company, doing smaller commissions for them.
Later he got to know Karl Wilfert, the engineer responsible for body construction at Mercedes, who finally
invited him to Sindelfingen in 1957. There he was then hired on 13.01.1958 at Mercedes as a
stylist.
Bruno Sacco - his career at Mercedes
Bruno Sacco's career at Mercedes was initially marked by a great fascination with the Mercedes SL. In the mid 1960s, Sacco even acquired the Mercedes 300 SL (W198) exhibit. From 1970 onwards, Bruno Sacco then took charge of the "Body Design and Dimensional Concept" department, before finally succeeding Friedrich Geiger in the main styling department in 1975 and setting the tone in terms of Mercedes appearance. A special feature of his style were the wide side protection strips, which were later also named after him: the Sacco boards. In 1993 he was promoted to head of design and as a member to the directorate until he finally retired in 1999.
