Mercedes E-Class - the heart of the brand with the star
Most people have the image of a Mercedes E-Class in mind when they think of the brand with the star from Swabia. Although it did not receive its name until 1993, the roots of the E-Class go back much further. Regardless of whether you call the W02 "Type Stuttgart" the forefather of this model series or the Mercedes 170V, the history of the MB E-Class is long.
The influence of both brands through the merger of Daimler and Benz in the late 1920s, sharpened the profile of the E-Class significantly. And one thing is clear: the original vehicles of this middle class are not only convincing in terms of technology and design, but are also one of the most popular classic cars of our time. A model series family that embodies spacious bodies, high ride comfort and dignified appeal. Attributes that are the strength of the Mercedes E-Class to this day.
The Mercedes 170V - ride towards the economic miracle
Things got really exciting after the Second World War: With the Mercedes 170V, originally introduced before the war, Mercedes picked up speed in the post-war years towards the economic miracle. Initially, the 170 will be used to produce commercial vehicles for rescue services, the police and tradesmen. A few years later, the sedan followed as the first post-war passenger car from Mercedes-Benz. The complete W136 series has one and the same chassis, all-steel body and outstanding driving performance for the time.
The pontoon - the legend of the Mercedes E-Class
The Ponton particularly stands out in the E-Class generation. On the one hand, it is the ultra-modern "three-box design" (the three-part design of the notchback sedan's body, defined equally in both directions) and, on the other, it owes its special position to technology. Fully integrated fenders and a rectangular layout ensure lower drag and significantly lower fuel consumption in the W120 and W121 series. It is the first Mercedes to mark the final farewell to coachbuilding and take the final step towards mass production.
However, the mid-size legend does not only stand for technical progress, the 180 Ponton-Mercedes stands for innovation and success. What the Beetle is to the little man, the pontoon is to the high earner. At market launch, the car cost a hefty 9950 marks, twice as much as the "Krabbler" from Wolfsburg. Nevertheless, the Ponton is considered the first Mercedes in the company's history to sell more than 20,000 units a year.
The "Mercedes tail fin" sedan - another legend of the e-medium class
In the early 1960s, the Ponton is replaced by the W110 Series, the „Mercedes Tailfin“. The body of the vehicle, invented by Béla Barény, a pioneer in vehicle safety and an employee of the Stuttgart-based automaker, features a safety passenger cell and crumple zones front and rear. It is the distinctive dipsticks on the rear fenders that give this generation of vehicles its name. On request, the "tail fin" model pampers occupants with numerous amenities such as a self-developed automatic transmission, steel sunroof as well as power steering, heated rear window and power windows.
The Mercedes "Dash 8" - the revolutionary million seller
Officially called the "New Generation," the 1968 Mercedes „Dash 8“ launches a special '68 revolution whose designation refers to its year of release. It is a new model series that marks the final departure from the unitary body of the pontoon and the "tail fin". Dynamic looking, the "stroke-eight" convinces with clear and harmonious design. Head restraints and automatic front seat belts are standard equipment on the W114 and W115 series. The ominous success of this model series confirms its concept, and the "dash eight" becomes the first million-seller of the brand with the star.
The Mercedes W123 model series - the last real Benz
Conceived and designed in a time when German workmanship was still a virtue, the Mercedes W123 is still one of the most successful and most built model series of the Swabian car manufacturer. Decorated with lush, chrome enthusiasts speak of the "last real Benz". It is not uncommon for the growing number of younger people to put five-figure sums on the table for this car. The station wagon's "T" stands for "Touristik und Transport" (tourism and transport) and emphasizes its role as a commercial vehicle and family-friendly leisure and lifestyle station wagon in the upper mid-range.
Modern not only in design and striking colors ranging from pale pastel to dazzling metallic, but also in the technology of the 123 series. Cruise control, ABS and driver airbag are available as options.
The first official Mercedes E-Class - an unprecedented leap in technology
The Mercedes W124 is the first mid-size model to officially receive the designation "E-Class" from 1993. With this series, Mercedes achieves a hitherto unprecedented technological leap in engine and body development. Consistent lightweight design and optimized aerodynamics reduce fuel consumption and enable even better driving performance than its predecessors.
More diverse and versatile than ever: this generation of the E-Class is represented by no less than four body variants. In addition to the sedan, the T-model and the coupe, a convertible follows for the first time in the recent history of the Mercedes E-Class. After two decades, it is the first four-seater open-top vehicle from the brand with the star. However, the Mercedes E60 AMG is nominated as the top model in this series with its only "wimpy" 381 hp. It is the first high-performance automobile in E-Class history to be created in collaboration between Mercedes-Benz and AMG.
The Mercedes E-Class - the heart of the Mercedes brand
From the very beginning, all generations of the Mercedes mid-range have enjoyed great popularity. All of them traditionally unite the apparent opposites of heart and mind in a special way. These are attributes that are still associated with the name of the brand today: Safety and comfort, coupled with cutting-edge technology and outstanding design - qualities that thrill the heart while convincing the mind. The brand embodies technological milestones and engineering artistry that inspires people. It is not without reason that the carmaker from Stuttgart calls the Mercedes E-Class the "heart" of the Mercedes-Benz brand.
