Unique from the beginning: The Mercedes Pagode

The career of the Mercedes-Benz “Pagode” model officially starts in 1963, starting with the Swiss motor show. This roadster does not only have the looks, but also inner qualities.

The first delivered model from the line of the Benz Pagode is the 230 SL (113.042) with a fabric roof and a 4-speed manual transmission. It contains an in-line engine with six cylinders and an intake-manifold fuel injection. From 2306 cubic centimeters, the motor draws a horse power of 150. The last model of this kind left the production line in 1967. From 1963 until 1967, 19381 models have been made.

In 1966, the 250 SL (113.043) complements the program and stays there until 1968. Its production name is W 113 A. In its basic equipment, it resembles the smaller model. It has an in-line engine with six cylinders and the power of 150 HS. The displacement has been expanded to 2495 cubic centimeters. The compression ratio changed from 9.3 to 9.5. The crankshaft bearing changed from four to seven. 5196 cars of this type left the factories during this time.

The 280 SL (113.044) has been produced from 1968 until 1971. Its internal name is W 113 E. The 280 SL has the same basic equipment as the 230 SL. The displacement grew to 2778 cubic centimeters and it has 170 HS. Two of its characteristics are the compression ratio of 9.5 and the seven crankshaft bearings. This is the model which was produced the most from the Pagode family.

Until the end of its production in 1971, the Mercedes-Benz W 113 grew to be a veritable model that did not shy away from comparison with its competitors. In 1971, the last vehicle of the W 113 production line, the 280 SL, was built.

Even Doris Day and Sophia Loren were seen driving a Mercedes Pagode, both on and off screen. It is only logical that admirers of the W 113 formed a classic cars club for this Mercedes Benz model. Even today, more than 50 years after the last model of the Mercedes W 113 has left the production band, a thorough supply of original and rebuilt spare parts can be guaranteed. The W 113 is a beloved guest at events such as the Techno Classica, the Concours d’Elégance and historical ralleys such as the Mille Miglia.
