The classic car industry is booming
The future of the automotive industry is hotly debated - internal combustion engine, hybrid, when will there be only e-mobility on the roads? These are all topics that politicians and society are currently grappling with. And yet they still exist - the old cars from the last century that are not being forgotten. On the contrary - the classic car industry is booming. Old tin is more popular than ever!
Classic car study by BBE Automotiv GmbH
What about the future of classic cars? The numbers speak for themselves! According to a study conducted by BBE Automotiv GmbH in 2020, the total number of oldtimers and youngtimers grew by more than 4 percent year-on-year to a total of around 9.5 million vehicles. The focus of this study is on cars that are 15 years old and older and used as a hobby or investment property - including around 200,000 classic cars that either have a red 07 license plate or are in museums as collector's items.
The most popular classics: the Beetle rolls and rolls
Unbeatable in first place on the winner's podium of the most popular classics, the Beetle. It rolls and rolls. With over 50,000 vehicles, the "Wolfsburg Dudu" is and remains the highest-volume classic car model of all time. Close on its heels is the Mercedes W123. With the VW Golf, the BMW 3-series and the E-class W124 from Mercedes-Benz, newcomers are ready to gradually push into the over-30 segment with large numbers. Overall, the classic car segment is dominated by German automakers. 70 percent of the classic cars bear the logo of German brands. Far behind are the Italians with a share of 7 percent, followed by British and U.S. manufacturers with 6 percent and French brands with a share of 5 percent.
Classic car boom - what are the reasons?
They move ponderously and offer little comfort - and yet hardly anyone can escape their spell! So where on
earth does this fascination for old cars,
which would just be a pile of rust without extensive care, come from?
The reasons are many - for some it's unforgettable childhood memories of joyrides with dad in a Mercedes
convertible. With the other it is simply the enthusiasm for nostalgia and uniqueness or the passion to
assemble old cars. Not to forget those who use their classic car as a worthwhile investment. Why hoard
your money boringly in a savings account when you have the chance to invest your money profitably and
have fun at the same time?
For many decades, enthusiasts shaped the market for classic vehicles. They have restored their treasures
mainly on their own. In recent years, however, more and more service offers have become established,
making the classic and youngtimer market accessible to more followers. Spare parts can be ordered online,
workshops offer repairs especially for classic cars and thus contribute to the boom of the classic car industry.
